6 (More) Athletes Who Overcame Clubfoot
In 2016, we at Clifton Foot & Ankle Center wrote a blog to raise awareness for Clubfoot, a congenital condition where a baby’s foot is twisted inward and downward. To do this, we focused the blog on 6 famous people born with this condition, from Mia Hamm to Damon Wayans, to show our patients with clubfoot that they can do it too!
Today, we’re giving you 6 more famous people who defied the odds of clubfoot. In particular, here are 6 athletes born with clubfoot who not only thrived off the field, but also on it.
Pat Summerall
One of the most recognizable voices in sports broadcasting, Pat Summerall endured a childhood marked by bilateral clubfoot.
Despite these early challenges, he went on to have a successful career as a defensive end and placekicker in the NFL. His physical prowess, despite his clubfoot, laid the foundation for his legendary broadcasting career.
Charles Woodson
Charles Woodson is one of the best football players of all time. A Heisman trophy. Multiple all pros. A gold jacket. A defensive player of the year award. A Super Bowl.
His incredible agility, speed, and long career show that clubfoot can not only be managed but also allow for peak athletic performance.
Steven Gerrard
English football icon Steven Gerrard was also born with a significant clubfoot. His parents pursued aggressive treatment and surgery early in his life.
Despite fears he might not play football at all, Gerrard developed into one of the sport’s most dominant midfielders, renowned for his powerful legs. We at Clifton credit the feet for that!
LeRoy Butler
Another NFL star who overcame clubfoot is LeRoy Butler, a safety for the Green Bay Packers.
Butler not only excelled in the NFL but is also credited with inventing the touchdown celebration Lambeau Leap. From Clubfoot surgeries as a child to becoming one of the NFL’s best defenders – not bad.
Miguel Riffo
Chilean professional footballer Miguel Riffo achieved great success as a defender and represented the Chilean national team.
His journey from early childhood surgeries to becoming a celebrated athlete highlights the possibilities for those with the condition in the world of professional soccer.
Jon Rahm
More recently, Spanish golf sensation (or should we say Masters champion) Jon Rahm was born with a clubfoot in his right foot, and his treatment involved daily casting and aggressive physical therapy from birth.
Rahm openly discusses how his condition results in limited mobility in his ankle, which forces him to develop a unique, powerful, and compensated golf swing. He is a prime example that adaptations can make us better at sports, not worse.
