7 Ways to Keep Your Feet Safe and Sound During the Holidays

COVID quarantines and other restrictions are more or less a thing of the past (thank you, vaccines), so many people feel freer than ever to resume beloved holiday traditions. As you prepare for all the wonder, feasts, and family gatherings that December brings, please take good care of your feet.
Board-certified podiatrist Dr. Kenneth R. Wilhelm has these seven suggestions for keeping your feet safe and sound during these joyous times:
- Wear supportive shoes. When you’re on your feet working extra hours or hitting the mall, avoid wearing old, worn-out, or uncomfortable shoes. Choose low heels and comfort over fashion statements.
- Ration your time in high heels. Enjoy your holiday gatherings and wear high heels if you like, but limit your time in them to a few hours.
- Be mindful at the buffet table – and the bar. Overindulgence may as well be synonymous with holiday parties. Treat yourself, but don’t go crazy with foods that can cause a painful gout attack. These include shellfish, red meat, rich cream sauces, and alcohol.
- Choose a reputable salon when you get a pedicure to avoid fungal toe infections.
- Don’t let snow and ice take you by surprise. When the weather outside is frightful, venture out wearing warm boots whose soles have good traction. Watch carefully where you walk to avoid icy patches and dangerous falls.
- Rest and pamper. Listen to your feet! Put them up if you’ve been on them all day. Soak them in warm water and soothing Epsom salts. Give them a nice massage and keep the skin supple with a dab of thick moisturizing cream.
- If foot pain bothers you daily, get it checked out. Foot problems such as arch and heel pain generally worsen if you ignore them. Treatment and recovery can be much more difficult if you put off foot care. Make an appointment with Dr. Wilhelm at Clifton Foot & Ankle Center in Centreville, Virginia.
