Socks Make Great Gifts for Your Family and for Our Community
What’s happening on December 4 in Fairfax County? All kinds of holiday activities, like the Winter Wonderland at Burke Lake Park. There’s also an opportunity for children to buy gifts with the help of a secret shopper at Colvin Run Mill General Store in Great Falls. Maybe they could pick up some socks for their siblings that day – because December 4 is also National Sock Day!
At Clifton Foot & Ankle Center, we look down upon anyone who looks down upon socks as a holiday gift. Yes, socks aren’t the most unique of gifts, but they are so needed – and they need not be boring.
Here’s why board-certified podiatrist Dr. Kenneth R. Wilhelm and our staff like giving socks as holiday gifts:
- Socks are fun. Gone are the days when the only things you could find on the shelves were white tube socks and solid knee-highs. Multi-colored, striped, and socks imprinted with great works of art abound in stores and online (and probably at that kids’ shopping event).
- Socks absorb sweat. Your two feet contain 250,000 sweat glands. That’s why they’re often so sweaty and smelly. Socks made of merino wool, bamboo, and cotton will wick moisture off your skin, which will help prevent both fungal and bacterial infections.
- Socks help shoes last longer. Do you wear shoes without socks? If so, then each time you put on your shoes, you’re inserting your feet into yesterday’s sweat – and the sweat buildup of all the previous days you didn’t wear socks. Your shoes will last longer – and smell finer – when you provide them with a sock barrier to absorb sweat.
- Socks protect your skin from blisters, which can easily form when soggy skin chafes against the inside of your shoes.

Socks are one of the most requested items among the homeless. Give those in need a better chance at feet that stay warm, dry, and free of infections this winter: buy extra pairs of socks to donate to a local shelter this holiday season. Or buy socks from a company that donates socks with your purchase. As always, we invite you to bring your concerns about socks, shoes, sweaty feet, blisters, and more to our office in Centreville, where you’ll receive expert podiatric care in a caring environment.
