At Clifton Foot & Ankle Center, we specialize in keeping your feet and ankles healthy. But that’s not all we’re interested in. We want you to keep your whole body in tip-top shape, and this month, it’s all about your heart.

Why the heart? Well, February is American Heart Month, so heart health is naturally on our minds and all over the news. In addition, there’s a pretty direct correlation between a heart that’s working well and feet that work well. Heart disease means that blood doesn’t always get pumped where it needs to go. Since the feet are far from the heart, they can easily get cheated. When there’s insufficient blood flow to your feet, problems such as numbness, poor healing, and fluid buildup – can occur, causing the feet to swell up.

Our board-certified podiatrist, Dr. Kenneth R. Wilhelm, is happy to join the National Institutes of Health in promoting heart health during February by using the hashtag “Move with Heart.” When you see #MoveWithHeart on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc., it’s a reminder of just how much your heart appreciates moving.

One simple way to get moving

You don’t have to become a marathon runner to improve your heart health. Making small changes that get you moving are easy to inject into your day and can make a big difference. Take frequent breaks from the computer to move around; park the car far away from the store entrance; take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Or – #movewithheart by starting a walking regimen! Walking –

  • is natural – you don’t need to take lessons;
  • is inexpensive – all you really need to get started is a great pair of shoes;
  • is easy to do with friends – grab a neighbor, spouse, or other family member and create a mutual support system. Keep each other accountable and promise to keep moving together;
  • gets you outside to enjoy fresh air and dose of Vitamin D from the sun (but don’t forget to wear sunscreen);
  • improves your cardiovascular health, reducing your risk of heart attack and stroke, even if you’ve got a strong family history.

So get moving for heart health, this month and every month. If your new walking routine causes you any foot pain, don’t delay in having Dr. Wilhelm check it out. Make an appointment with us at our office in Centreville, Virginia. Our number is (703) 996-3000.
