Social distancing is a good thing for flattening the curve and helping to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. But it can also be a good thing to learn a new skill, such as cooking.

Cooking is a fantastic skill to have for many reasons:

  • Cooking at home is healthier and cheaper than eating at restaurants or getting takeout.
  • International cooking teaches you about other cultures and their cuisines.
  • Cooking is a means of self-expression and creativity.
  • It can become a family affair. Spend time with your kids while teaching them about good nutrition, self-sufficiency, and adventurous eating.

While you can’t benefit from in-person instruction right now, you do have several options while you ride out the pandemic at home:

  • Learn to cook online for free. During the coronavirus pandemic, several online cooking classes are being offered free of charge. For example, the BBC offers dozens of free videos demonstrating cooking techniques. Also, TV personality and Chef Christopher Kimball has made his online cooking classes free until April 30.
  • Pay for an online classForks Over Knives is offering reduced prices on their plant-based cooking video courses beginning April 21.
  • Dig out your own recipes. You’ve got cookbooks somewhere in your house, yes? Maybe your mom gifted you with Grandma’s recipe file some time ago? Pull these out of the back of your closet and get experimenting. Cooking by trial and error can be fun and a great learning tool.
  • Use your smartphone. A quick search in Google PlayStore or Apple App Store yields dozens of learn-to-cook apps.
