A lot us start the new year wanting to be healthier, slimmer, more fit, etc. for the new year! But be careful making gradual and truly healthy changes so that you don’t end up injuring or harming yourself. Here are a few healthy resolutions that will help you achieve your goals more easily.

  1. For Diabetes: A diabetes diagnosis means that you must start being very conscious of what you are eating, but exercise is just as important. Try keeping a simple food and exercise journal so that you can track how much you exercise and what types of food you eat. If you notice your eating patterns are unhealthy, a journal will help you recognize it. Noting how much you exercise can also motivate you to exercise more.
  2. For Weight Loss: Don’t jump into a diet that is too restrictive or difficult to follow. Instead, think of making a lifestyle change. An easy way to help you lose weight is to substitute one meal every day for a salad or other healthy option. If you’re comfortable with that, you can eventually switch all of your meals to be healthy!
  3. For Strength Training: Start small. Grab some weights that you can use from home so that you don’t use the gym as an excuse not to exercise. Tell yourself that if you watch TV, every commercial break, you need to be moving (jumping jacks, running in place, lifting small weights, lunges, crunches etc.) You will probably end up watching less TV (but if you don’t at least the more you watch, the healthier you’ll be!)
  4. For General Health: Something as simple as a push up can help determine how fit you are. Test yourself once a month to see if you can meet or exceed the recommended numbers for an average male or female. One month you can do push ups, another you can run laps, and another you can try pull ups. Challenge a friend to join you if a little competition motivates you!
