If you’ve experienced weight gain during the COVID-19 pandemic, the reasons aren’t too hard to find:

  • you’ve slacked off your regular exercise routine (the gym’s been closed)
  • you haven’t been going out, and you’re just not moving around as much
  • there’s been an increase in baking (note the flour and yeast shortages at the grocery store) and eating of sweets
  • eating, in general, has been a way to relieve stress, anxiety, and boredom
  • wearing sweat pants all the time conceals the extra plump that’s crept on

New cause for concern

Carrying extra weight isn’t healthy. That’s not news. Health professionals everywhere will tell you that overweight and obesity are bad for just about every bodily system. Dr. Kenneth R. Wilhelm, our board-certified podiatrist in Fairfax County, Virginia, will tell you that feet suffer when they endure the stress of extra pounds.

But it’s important to understand that in this age of COVID, being overweight puts you at further risk should you contract the virus. For one thing, medical procedures such as taking images and inserting a breathing tube can be a lot harder to perform on an obese patient. Even worse, obesity often comes with health challenges like high blood pressure and diabetes. A COVID-19 infection on top of these existing conditions makes the body so much more vulnerable.

We’re in it for the long haul

A few extra pounds probably aren’t going to increase your risk of recovering from COVID-19 greatly. But if there were ever a reason to reverse an upward trend of the scale, it’s this coronavirus. Obesity and all that can come with it – heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes – increases your chances of succumbing. Until a vaccine or a definitive treatment is available, we at Clifton Foot & Ankle Center encourage you to watch your weight and stay as healthy as possible. Remember, we’re here whenever you need skilled foot or ankle care. Call our Centreville office at (703) 996-3000 or make an appointment online.
