Bunions affect millions of people a year. Bunions are formed when your big toe is slowly pushed away from your other toes causing bone misalignment. Having bunions makes it difficult to find properly fitting shoes which can cause other issues in your feet. Bunions can also be very painful if they’re not treated early. Here are some of the top causes of bunions.

  1. Shoes – Poor fitting shoes are the number one reason for bunions. It is completely preventable if you wear shoes that are not too tight and fit your feet well. High heels are also one of the leading causes for bunions. This is why women generally have a much higher rate of bunion formation than men.
  2. Genetics – Sometimes even if you don’t frequently wear high heels or painful shoes, bunions can still form. This may be due to genetics. If you know that members of your family suffer from bunions, you should be extra careful and take preventative measures before bunions form.
  3. Arthritis – Arthritis can affect the joints which can potentially lead to bunions forming. Bunions can also form as a result of arthritis. If you have arthritis, or have any other conditions where your ligaments, joints or muscles are affected, watch out for early signs of bunions.
  4. Other conditions – Any conditions that affect your feet or weaken any area of your foot around your big toe, can result in bunions.
