How to Shoe Shop for Less-than-Perfect Feet
Are anybody’s feet perfect? Probably – although the number of people without a single foot problem is substantially smaller than the number of people with bothersome issues. Three of the most common foot issues we treat at Clifton Foot & Ankle Center are bunions, flat feet, and plantar fasciitis. The shoes you wear have a direct effect on these three issues. Here’s how to shoe shop if you’re dealing with these conditions.
- If you have bunions: A bunion is a malformation of the joint at the base of the big toe. The joint sticks out, so it makes sense to wear shoes with a wide toe box. Shoes made of soft, flexible materials are also a good option. Just say “no” to rigid, narrow-toed shoes or spiked heels – they put too much pressure on the affected joint.
- Choosing shoes for flat feet: When shopping for shoes for flat feet, the operative word is “support.” Your feet have little or no arch; therefore, they require shoes with a firm structure and excellent arch support.
- What to wear if you have plantar fasciitis: Minimize your heel pain with comfortable, supportive, well-fitting shoes. Sneakers with a deep, cushioned heel bed and shoes with rocker-style soles are two excellent options. Stay away from flat shoes. A low heel or wedge will reduce the pressure on your heel.
The wrong pair of shoes can make plantar fasciitis pain last longer, cause flat feet to start hurting, and speed up the progress of a painful bunion. But shoes alone don’t tell the whole story. Even the perfect pair of shoes may not be enough to ease your pain.
