7 Ways to Relieve Tired Feet
When you’re on your feet all day, it’s normal to have some aches and pains. Board-certified podiatrist Dr. Kenneth R. Wilhelm offers these seven ways to soothe your weary feet:
- Rest. Just put your feet up and give them a break!
- Ice and massage. Applying ice will help reduce any muscle or tissue inflammation. When you massage, gently rub each part of your foot. You may do this while soaking your feet in warm water. For extra-added relief, add some Epsom salts to the water.
- Stretch. Roll your ankles, pull your toes back with your hands, write the alphabet in the air with your big toe – and do other stretching exercises.
- Take pain medication. Over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil (ibuprofen) can help reduce pain and swelling.
- Change your shoes. First, if you’ve been wearing the same pair of shoes a lot, switch to another pair. It can take the pressure off specific areas of your feet. Also, examine your shoes for wear and tear. You may benefit from a new pair if your old ones no longer provide adequate support.
- Try orthotic shoe inserts. You can purchase orthotics in stores or get them custom-made by prescription at our podiatry office.
- Lose extra pounds. If you’re overweight, it can put excessive strain on your feet.
