9 Ways to Observe National “I Love My Feet” Day
Quick – what’s your primary mode of transportation? Car? Train? No! Most of us are lucky enough to get around primarily on our own two feet. When your feet fail you, you may have to say goodbye to your favorite activities for a time. That’s why board-certified podiatrist Kenneth R. Wilhelm, DPM encourages our patients to take good care of their feet.
This “National I Love My Feet Day,” which we celebrate on August 17, make a promise to love your feet. Here are nine ways you can fulfill that promise:
- Practice good hygiene: wash your feet daily, trim your nails properly, and moisturize.
- Wear well-fitting shoes with plenty of room in the toes. If you wear high heels, don’t wear them for more than a few hours at a time.
- Protect your feet from fungi by donning flip-flops in moist areas such as locker rooms and public pools.
- Apply sunscreen to your feet any time you’re in the sun for a prolonged period. Use a broad-spectrum lotion or spray with an SPF of 30 or higher
- Don’t overdo it. If you’re a dedicated athlete, take rest days. If you’re just starting an exercise program, do it slowly and gradually increase your time and distance.
- Take extra pressure off your feet by losing weight if you’re overweight or obese.
- Avoid getting diabetes. It comes with numerous foot complications, including nerve damage and decreased circulation.
- Eat a balanced diet and get enough Vitamin D and calcium, which work together to keep your bones healthy and strong.
- Fix problems early. Foot pain doesn’t always get better on its own. In fact, conditions such as plantar fasciitis, tendinitis, and bunions will likely get worse. A stress fracture of the bone can progress to a full break if you continue to walk on it without resting the foot or wearing a protective boot. When something hurts, it’s best to make an appointment right away with Dr. Wilhelm.
