Ever hear of the “runner’s high?” It’s one of the reasons running is such a popular sport. After a run, athletes report a feeling of exuberance, an energy that can’t be squashed. It’s partly because of the joy of accomplishment – setting a goal to run a couple of miles and getting it done. But it’s also physical. Studies show the body releases natural biochemicals that stimulate the brain and reduce feelings of anxiety.
And maybe, just maybe, runners feel a high when they realize they managed to finish a run without getting injured! Sports injuries to the feet and ankles are extremely common. Running places all of your weight on your feet and ankles. So, they’re prone to injuries, including

- blisters, calluses, and corns

Of course, one of the best “treatments” is to avoid getting injured in the first place. Runners can do that by:
- Stretching before every run.
- Wearing shoes made for running. No other kind of shoes will do! If you’re not sure what shoes are best for you, contact our Fairfax County podiatry office or a specialty shoe store.
- Wearing well-fitting, moisture-wicking socks.
- Keeping toenails trimmed closely prevents nails from hitting the front of your shoes, becoming painful, turning black, and perhaps even falling off.
- Being careful not to do too much too soon. Gradually Increasing your speed and distance will help you avoid overuse injuries.
