Nobody should ignore a foot problem, but we’re focusing on men today for two reasons: first, June is International Men’s Health Month, so it makes sense to single out our male patients. Second, it’s fair to say that, in general, men are more reluctant than women to seek medical care. So, at Clifton Foot & Ankle Center, we want to encourage men to contact us with foot pain or troubling changes in their feet.
There are a couple of reasons why foot problems often worsen without treatment, and specific foot problems are symptoms of other problems or diseases that need attention.
With this in mind, here are four foot issues that should prompt a call to our Fairfax County podiatry office.
- Pain that lasts more than a few days. Arch pain, heel pain, toe pain – any pain that won’t quit or isn’t getting better with home RICE treatment – warrants an examination by our board-certified podiatrist Kenneth R. Wilhelm. The sooner you treat most problems, the easier they will be to fix. For example, heel pain due to plantar fasciitis can last for many months and become debilitating. But prompt, professional treatment will shorten recuperation time substantially and prevent complications.
- Unexplained swelling. If you stub your toe, you’d expect it might get swollen. Likewise, if you’re on your feet all day and your feet swell, it’s probably normal. But when your feet swell all the time, and there doesn’t seem to be any immediate cause, have them checked out. Swelling can indicate a circulatory problem, a hormonal imbalance, or even kidney, liver, or heart disease. Certain medications can also cause feet to swell, and you may need to have those meds adjusted.
- Excessive foot odor. Everyone experiences sweaty, smelly feet on occasion. But it’s not normal to have feet that sweat and smell all the time. You may need treatment for hyperhidrosis, a genetic condition. Furthermore, your excessively sweaty feet may signal a problem with your thyroid gland.
- Numbness. Lack of feeling in your feet can be a sign of blocked arteries and/or diabetes.
