Spring into Spring With Healthy Feet

Spring could not seem further away for those of us in Fairfax County, Virginia. The vernal equinox came in right on the heels of a winter storm warning, and we thought we heard people all over DC are yelling “Snow way!” or something like that. Yes – Snow just won’t leave us alone.

Well, the good thing about these spring storms is that they tend to melt quickly. The bad thing about such a long winter is how many folks have spent it doing little in the way of exercise. Call it the winter blahs, an intense dislike of the cold, or what have you. Winter often spells a sedentary lifestyle for a lot of people. And if their waists have expanded, it’s safe to say that the extra inches won’t be melting as quickly as the inches of white stuff that just fell to the ground.

Exercise to the rescue

Podiatrist Dr. Kenneth R. Wilhelm of Clifton Foot & Ankle Center is a strong proponent of exercise for all our patients.

Exercise:

  • helps to keep bones strong
  • improves your cardiovascular health
  • keeps joints flexible
  • helps ward off illnesses like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes
  • goes a long way in helping to shed winter weight gain.

Excess weight and obesity are in many ways the enemy of good foot health. Carrying around too many pounds is too often the reason behind heel pain, fallen arches, stress fractures, and arthritis. Obesity can also throw off your balance, leaving you more likely to fall down.

So, defy those leftover piles of snow and give spring the warm welcome she deserves by getting out there and walking the neighborhood, grabbing a copy of the Fairfield County Bicycle Map and hitting one of our region’s many bike trails, or inviting a friend to play some tennis. For good, all-around health, keep up the good exercise work.

If for any reason you have foot or ankle pain that makes exercise difficult or painful, contact us for an appointment. We have the experience and the tools to manage your foot pain and get you back in the spring of things as soon as possible. Call us in Centreville, VA at (703) 996-3000.
