Make an Informed Decision to Have Foot or Ankle Surgery

When it comes to foot pain and suffering, there may come a time when a person must admit that what they’re doing isn’t working. That even though they’ve followed their doctor’s advice to a “T” – taken the proper medications, worn the boot for as many weeks as recommended, purchased special footwear and orthotics, performed every single exercise prescribed – the pain just isn’t going away.

These kinds of cases aren’t the norm, but here at Clifton Foot & Ankle Center, board-certified podiatrist Kenneth R. Wilhelm, DPM does treat patients who’ll need to take a bold step toward complete healing: surgery of the foot or ankle.

Who needs foot or ankle surgery?

We may recommend surgery to treat a number of conditions that aren’t improving through more conservative methods like rest, steroid injections, or different footwear. Significant injuries, including sports injuries, are really high on the list, as well as other conditions like anatomical defects, deformities, and degenerative diseases such as arthritis and Charcot foot.

What will the foot surgeon do?

Depending on your particular injury or condition, surgery may be used to

  • restore bones to their proper alignment
  • fuse together fractured bones using plates and screws
  • remove whatever’s causing the pain, such as an outgrowth of bone (bone spur)
  • completely replace a joint that no longer functions; for example, a shattered ankle may best be treated with total ankle replacement
