5 Superfoods to Help Your Running Game

Running (or jogging) takes up a lot of energy. It’s important to make sure that when you run, your body is properly nourished so that you don’t do more harm than good. Here is a list of the top 5 superfoods that will keep you running strong.

  1. Salmon (wild) – We know this fish is full of omega-3 fatty acids for boosting brain power, but those same fatty acids can help keep your blood vessels healthy and help make sure your nervous system functions properly. A study also showed that fish oil also helps increase the amount of blood that is pumped through the heart per pump, making your exercise more effective.
  2. Cherries – Cherries are extremely rich in antioxidants and they taste delicious! One of the antioxidants called anthocyanin is particularly abundant and help keep blood vessels working properly. Cherries have also been known to help prevent soreness and lower the risk of tumor growth. Who knew cherries could be so beneficial?
  3. Bananas – There’s a reason why bananas are loved by all athletes. Bananas contain over 30 grams of carbohydrate, no fat and approximately 400 mg of potassium. As you sweat while running, your potassium level drops, making you fatigued. This can easily be replenished with a few bites of banana. Bananas are 100% goodness!
  4. Soy – Soy milk, edamame, and tofu are all made of soy. Soy has a multitude of benefits, but one of the best for running is it helps your muscles heal and recover faster. You can add soy to your smoothies or eat a soy burger. Soy also helps lower cholesterol, which is beneficial for your overall health.
  5. Whole Wheat Pasta – We all know runners like to carb it up with pasta before going on long or intense runs. Make your meal even more beneficial by choosing whole wheat pasta. Whole wheat helps you maximize and replenish muscle glycogen stores, which means it’s a great and healthy fuel for your workout.

Eating a balanced diet is just as important as running. If you’re not sure how much you’re supposed to be eating, consult a doctor before starting any strenuous exercise. Under-eating or over-eating can be dangerous for your body, especially over long periods of time. Dr. Kenneth R. Wilhelm of Clifton Foot & Ankle Center has been helping and treating patients in the Centreville, VA area for over eighteen years.
