Strengthen Your Bones for Healthy Feet and Ankles

Avoiding injury isn’t the only way to keep your feet and ankles healthy. It is also very important to have the proper nutrition to ensure that the bones themselves stay strong and stable. Getting enough calcium and vitamin D can really affect the health of your feet, ankles, and the rest of your body. It can even slow down diseases such as osteoporosis and prevent a variety of other ailments. Here is a list of great foods to always keep in your diet.

  1. Yogurt: Yogurt comes in many different forms. There’s fat-free, sugar-free, whole, 2%, Greek, etc. Choose a yogurt with a low amount of sugar and a high amount of vitamin D and calcium. If your yogurt tastes more like a creamy fruit preserve, it probably isn’t doing too much good for you. Also, Greek yogurts, although known for other health benefits, don’t have as much vitamin D as regular yogurts. As a bonus, try to find a yogurt that also has live cultures to aid with proper digestion.
  2. Milk (& Other Dairy): This seems like an obvious answer, however not all milk is equal either. Besides cow’s milk, there is also almond, soy, coconut, etc. for non-dairy drinkers. Find milk that is as natural as possible and hasn’t had the nutrition stripped away. For other dairy products such as cheese, eat the ones that aren’t as fatty and contain a lot of natural vitamins. Eggs are also a healthy option. Try to buy organic as non-organic may contain a lot of pesticides and unnecessary chemicals.
  3. Fish: Sardines, salmon and tuna are all good fish to eat if you need vitamin D or calcium. They are naturally full of vitamin D and calcium and salmon especially has a lot of healthy omega-3 fatty acids that are beneficial for all parts of your body. Tuna shouldn’t be consumed too frequently due to its large size and high quantities of mercury, but every now and then is still okay.
  4. Greens: Spinach and collard greens are good choices, but greens in general are full of many different vitamins and minerals that are helpful for your bones.
